Abbott: carbon tax is "economic self-harm"

No ETS or carbon (dioxide) tax

In this sea of climate madness which we are currently drowning, only Tony Abbott speaks the blindingly obvious truth: a carbon tax would be damaging to Australia’s economy for no benefit to the climate whatsoever. And the majority of business thinks the same (take note Moonbat Marius):

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is sticking to his guns that he will “never” endorse Australia going it alone by putting a price on carbon, a stance supported by a new business survey.

Mr Abbott said on Friday that he will “never” put a price on carbon unless this becomes part of an enforceable international system.

“A go-it-alone carbon tax would be another act of economic self harm and it’s the last thing Australia needs,” Mr Abbott told Macquarie radio.

“The price of your power, the price of your petrol, the price of everything you do goes up under a carbon tax.”

He also attacked the government for a change of heart having “emphatically ruled out a carbon tax pre-election”.

“Now, apparently they’re ruling it in. It just goes to show you can’t trust these guys,” he said.

A survey of 1000 business owners conducted by the Australian Chamber of Commerce of Industry (ACCI) found that 75 per cent oppose the unilateral adoption of an emissions trading scheme (ETS) or carbon tax.

“Calls for a carbon tax or ETS in the name of business certainty certainly don’t represent the general view of business owners,” the chamber’s director of economics and industry policy, Greg Evans, said in releasing the survey results on Friday.

“The reality is business and consumers (would) face the prospect of a doubling of energy prices by 2015 with little global gain.”

UPDATE: Julia Gillard’s excuse for the backflip on the carbon tax is that it’s no longer her decision what happens on climate change, because the “committee” will tell her. No, seriously.

She told Fairfax that what she said before the federal election on climate change no longer applies because a committee of politicians and experts will now develop the policy.

“We laboured long and hard to develop a market-based mechanism,” she said of the emissions trading scheme. [Waffle]

“But I’m recognising the political reality. I campaigned as Prime Minister in an election campaign with policies for the Government. [More waffle]

“We are in a new environment where in order for any action to happen in this Parliament, you need more consensus than the views and policies of the Government and this committee is the way of recognising that.” (source)

No it’s not. It’s a stacked team of warmists who have made up their minds already.

Those independents who handed this incompetent government power should hang their heads in shame.

  1. The independents have no shame, nor the majority of politicians.
That is the essential problem. We no longer elect people of moral standing, but rather a brand that stands for nothing. Gillard the usurper is guaranteeing a long stretch in the wilderness for labor, when is comes. In the meantime the liberals can enjoy a target rich environment of government weakness, fraud and venality.
Their main danger is not competing policies, but complacency in that it will become too easy to pick off ministers at will. Abbott would serve this country well if he continues to stiffen the back bones of his troops for the coming inevitable onslaught, while continuing to develop good policy remedies to the likely impacts of the current madness.

The real challenges in the world still remain : truly open trade, financial instability, government default…..
None of these are seem to be on the radar, until they happen of course.
The parlous state of government and private finance here will become all too evident when the rest of the world collapses economically, and we no longer have the mining income stream. Economic recession guarantees reduced energy consumption all by itself, but this “government” would still implement a carbon tax – because they will need to money to continue the welfare state, albeit in a reduced form.
On the bright side commodities will be cheap, except for back bones. Back bones will be the most valued and priceless (and rare) commodity in the world.

  2. Gillard knew about having a committee before the election, and now she is using it as an excuse for reneging on her promise? What a load of crap.

    Where to from here?
Perhaps we are reaching a new watershed in politics that will see radical change in political thought in this country. We are seeing that change in the USA with the developing “tea party” movement. A groundswell of discontent is developing amongst the population and I doubt that Australia will be immune, from this groundswell.

Gillard has already started sowing the seeds of her own destruction along with that of the labor party, with the backflip on the ETS. The backflip is only a symptom with plenty of other issues about to surface once leadership can bring those to the surface. One of those issues is the one of arrogance to Joe/Joanne citizen. Gillard’s backflip is a sign of ineptitude, which will be evinced even more as the tail starts wagging the dog.

The addiction to the squandering of huge sums of money by government cannot be controlled without a wholesale change in the rotton culture of government. Unfortunately, this will not happen until there is a major cleaning out of the rot.

Today, the development of technology with it’s ability to drammatically improve efficiencies, is the one thing that has enabled us to progress. Take technology away and we would be living in humpys.

Re lefty journalists. No revelation here, just a bit more confirmation.

The comment by J Hubbard Feb 27 10:37 PM is superb:

“In my experience as a university prof, journalism students are the least curious I’ve ever encountered. Even nursing students and early childhood education students contribute more in class and are more interested in learning. Journalists for a large part have socialist-instilled instincts to advocate for PC causes (to give them a veneer of morality). This is a disaster when mixed with no interest in discovering what is going on if it does not fit their worldview.”

This Hubbard guy should be tracked down and given a medal.

  5. i have said it once but here goes again,Gillard has been officially charged with treason in the Victorian Supreme Court along with others and yes it pretty much got swept under the carpet,no media coverage at all, nothin, nada, zip! She is hoping it will just go away but it wont,EVER until such time that it is actually dealt with, and another thing according to OUR constitution because of this fact she is not eligible to be an MP let alone PM so all this climate crap and all the general fabian agenda crap she and her UN flunkys hope to impose can be made to go away with her,we all just need to wake up.This country belongs to us not them, they work for us not us for them, its not just promises at election time then shut up we know what we are doing.

  6. I’m surprised Tony Abbott is the only politican who seemingly has the guts to publically say no to the “de-developing” to burrow from J. Holdren carbon tax, yet they still want to foist it upon Australia? This is insanity taken to a whole new level.
