Unbelievable

Devastation in Japan

Yep, you’ve guessed it. In the wake of the tragic events in Japan, a hysterical global warming activist site [grist.org – no link because I don’t want to give that bunch of ecotards any more traffic, but you can find it yourself] has linked climate change to increased earthquakes and tsunamis. We’ve heard this before, of course, see here, but to publish so soon after such an event shows astonishing bad taste.

So far, today’s tsunami has mainly affected Japan — there are reports of up to 300 dead in the coastal city of Sendai — but future tsunamis could strike the U.S. and virtually any other coastal area of the world with equal or greater force, say scientists. In a little-heeded warning issued at a 2009 conference on the subject, experts outlined a range of mechanisms by which climate change could already be causing more earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity.

“When the ice is lost, the earth’s crust bounces back up again and that triggers earthquakes, which trigger submarine landslides, which cause tsunamis,” Bill McGuire, professor at University College London, told Reuters.

Melting ice masses change the pressures on the underlying earth, which can lead to earthquakes and tsunamis, but that’s just the beginning. Rising seas also change the balance of mass across earth’s surface, putting new strain on old earthquake faults, and may have been partly to blame for the devastating 2004 tsunami that struck Southeast Asia, according to experts from the China Meteorological Administration.

Never let a good crisis go to waste, right? And as Soylent Green rightly points out:

Earthquakes and tidal waves never happened before industrialisation.

These half-wits have no concept of the fact that earth is, and has always been, a dynamic planet. Earthquakes and tsunamis are what the earth does.

h/t Soylent Green [offensive language alert – he was rightly very, very angry at this]

  1. Let Grist have the traffic. It takes a great deal of rationalization to connect earthquakes to global warming and most people will see it for what it is. These sorts of stories do more to undermine the consensus position than support it.

Here’s an article (located by contributor/reader “Treeman” over at Jo Nova’s blog) at Reuters.

Here we have from the warmists; an offering of bullshit…….of the highest order….

Quakes, volcanic eruptions, giant landslides and tsunamis may become more frequent as global warming changes the earth’s crust, scientists said on Wednesday.

    and my favourite…

Climate-linked geological changes may also trigger “methane burps,” the release of a potent greenhouse gas, currently stored in solid form under melting permafrost and the seabed, in quantities greater than all the carbon dioxide (CO2) in our air today.

    Methane burps?????

Oh dearie me, this is far worse than I thought……..and just what IS that TERRIBLE smell?

  3. “Earthquakes and tidal waves never happened before industrialisation.”

Just awsome, simply awesome! Now I have heard it all … Thanks for the laugh, that’s the best one yet!!!

  4. SOYLENT GREEN says:

Thanks Simon. I already had two perfectly serviceable posts up for the day that I had to bury after seeing that ghoulish insanity. Even though I expected it, I didn’t think anyone would do it that fast.
But then, they wouldn’t be opportunistic scum if they’d waited. Would they?

    • SOYLENT GREEN says:

Oh, and thanks again. One of the Telegraph blogs picked up my rant. Another 1,500 or so unsuspecting visitors. And it’s all your fault. 😉

  5. These AGW zealots are becoming a real concern. The day is not very far away when this whole AGW crock of shit collapes under its own weight. This is a good news / bad news story. The good news is obvious. The bad news is that it will leave in its wake a huge social instability problem. AGW is way beyond a religion for these people – they have invested every molecule and fibre of their being into this fanatical belief system – one that essentialy postulates that I must reduce you to a state of utter impoverishment to “save” you.

As a consequence they will never – ever – accept a repudiation of their religious belief systems or be swayed from their one true mission in life. I hope that some contingency planning is being done to deal with the potential public order problems created by all of these unhinged people being suddenly cast adrift from their security blanket. The historical lesson is that when this happens, one of 2 things happen: either the barbarians exploit the instability to take over from without, or the military takes over from within. Neither end well.

    • The Loaded Dog says:

I think you’re view here (the “bad news” component) has far more truth in it than many realise.

      • Yeah – I’m not laughing about it so much these days.
It’s uncanny the similarity between these zealots and the ease with which Adolph’s “final solution” got up in the 30s. The same undercurrents apply here – we have a very similar (and over-simplified) cause & effect relationship underpinning the philosophy that appeals to simple minds. We are seeing the increasing rise of a very single-minded, self-appointed, ruthless, wanna-be authoritarian rulin class. Pay close attention to the thin-lipped, severe, humourless Christine Milne the next time she is lecturing us on the need to reduce our standard of living – how easy is it to picture her as the Kommandant of a correctional institution?

One of the hallmarks of authoritarianism is to label or brand its dissenters – for a very simple reason: it is meant to both intimidate, and to make it easy for the dim-witted supporters to identify targets to be dealt with. One lesson that recent history does teach us is that when authoritarianism is on the rise, there are no shortage of morons than come out from under their rocks to willingly do the dirty work for the ones in charge. Any doubts? Refer to: Adolph Hitler, Josef Stalin, Erich Honecker, Mao, Pol Pot, Iran, plus dozens more too numerous to mention.

        • The Loaded Dog says:

Any doubts? Refer to: Adolph Hitler…et al

I’ve done quite a bit of research into the Nazi’s and the circumstances surrounding their social and political rise to power under Adolf.

I am under NO illusions about how this could pan out given the right circumstances.

The political implications of an event like the Reichstag fire are petrifying.

  6. ‘Melting ice masses change the pressures on the underlying earth, which can lead to earthquakes and tsunamis, but that’s just the beginning.’ – Global Warming Idiot

Even if we make the assumption that the polar ice caps and Greenland are indeed melting (which they are not), this on it’s own would have absolutely no impact upon the ‘underlying earth’ (i.e. core and mantle), if only because tectonic activity is in no way caused by, or associated with, shifting ice on the surface; earthquakes and volcanic activity are related to the stresses due to the incremental movement of the landmasses themselves over the course of millions of years, which is why countries like New Zealand and Japan seem to have more than their fair share of both. It is due to the fact that they lie directly upon fault lines.
How can these self-styled ‘climate experts’ not know this (very basic, primary school) fact? It’s just GOT to be a joke.

    • The Loaded Dog says:

It’s just GOT to be a joke.

You’d think so, but April 1st is still 19 days away.

No, the whole movement is an ongoing JOKE that gets more outrageous every time one of them opens their mouths to utter..

    • Spot on Pete but the problem is not whether or not these tards know rather they are hoping the masses have little or no idea, that way its easier for the agenda to gain mass acceptance on the back of dodgy info and ignorance and before you can say my bullshit detector just blew up again……hello carbon tax.

  7. I’m just waiting to see a prominent geologist/geophysicist come out and call this a load of BS, and then be attacked because he’s not a specialist in climatology…

  8. rukidding says:

Once again the Earth shows what insignificant little nits we are and when she has had enough of us she will just shake us off like fleas.
Our thoughts should be with the people of Japan.

  9. we do live on the crust of the earth, we do take chances when we live on top of fault line or old rivers beds, R.I.P

  10. there are lots of solar flares, and a big moon, and a comet, in our near orbit, that creates pressures on the planet

  11. I thought it must have been a joke when I saw it. But no, it is real. I suppose there are some that are silently gleeful that a Nuclear plant got damaged as well. (Chance of death resulting from that : 0%). Plus Japan is a very industrialised country – the zealots are probably happy amongst themselves that industry will stop for a while.

I’ll say this for the Japanese – they know how to build things to withstand massive quakes, and they are prepared and ready. A shame that there is little that can be done against Tsunamis. This one event will cause more damage than 200 years of projected ‘climate change’ ever would, even if it was real.

This massive quake will not cause as much death as the one in Haiti, because they have (gosh!) cheap energy and an advanced technological society. Who knew that ‘high carbon footprints’ actually saves lives?!

My thoughts go out to all the industrious and polite Japanese people I have ever met.

  12. “First it’s global warming, then it’s climate change, now it’s probably tectonic instability — no doubt all caused by man,” he [Tom Borelli of the Free Enterprise Project] said.

Some respond to Japan earthquake by pointing to global warming

  13. Confusious says:

Most tragic is that the troglyitic masses who are on the Labor/Green social services payroll will lap up all of this nonsense and scream for more.
They are not supposed to think since the party does all of that for them.
Unfortunately, given the results of election, slight majority of Australians seems to be hell bent to devour these loads of excrement piled up by Gillard, Brown, Wayne, Wong and supplied by pseudoscientific, and let me stress, totally unqualified, charlatans Al Gore, Garaud and similar “luminaries”.
It is sad that we now to have to live under this “dictatorship of Proletariat” as Karl Marx described this rule of retards.
