Sun may be "less active" in coming years

Sunspot with Earth to scale

But it won’t have any effect on the climate, because as any fule kno, the only thing that drives climate is man-made CO2 – specifically man-made CO2 from SUVs driven by right-wing sceptics.

If you were an impartial, apolitical scientist, you would be thrilled at this prospect, because it would be a heaven-sent (literally) opportunity to monitor and investigate the true effect of the sun’s activity on our climate. However, you can be sure that the alarmists will avoid it like the plague, because the results may challenge their man-made groupthink mindset.

Some unusual solar readings, including fading sunspots and weakening magnetic activity near the poles, could be indications that our sun is preparing to be less active in the coming years.

The results of three separate studies seem to show that even as the current sunspot cycle swells toward the solar maximum, the sun could be heading into a more-dormant period, with activity during the next 11-year sunspot cycle greatly reduced or even eliminated.

The results of the new studies were announced today (June 14) at the annual meeting of the solar physics division of the American Astronomical Society, which is being held this week at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

“The solar cycle may be going into a hiatus,” Frank Hill, associate director of the National Solar Observatory’s Solar Synoptic Network, said in a news briefing today (June 14).

The studies looked at a missing jet stream in the solar interior, fading sunspots on the sun’s visible surface, and changes in the corona and near the poles.

“This is highly unusual and unexpected,” Hill said. “But the fact that three completely different views of the sun point in the same direction is a powerful indicator that the sunspot cycle may be going into hibernation.” (source)

Some are even talking about a repeat of the Maunder Minimum, the period in the 17th century when sunspots disappeared (and, coincidentally, the planet went through the Little Ice Age). Interesting times.

  1. Problem is with reduced sunspot activity and the resulting cooling of the planet, is the warmists will trumpet their success and have that long awaited warm fuzzy feeling (no pun intended). They will feel that their stance on AGW was vindictated, even though the C02 levels will continue to rise.
Interesting to see what they say then.
In my opinion, cooling is a lot worse than warming for the majority of people living on the planet.

    • You’re probably right, Banana. If the earth warms they blame C02. If it cools they blame C02. That’s why they changed from calling it “global warming” to “climate change”, so they could have an each way bet and inflict their taxes & wealth transfers on us regardless.

    • The Loaded Dog says:

Interesting to see what they say then.

It’s irrelevant really. With a religion all things can be explained away religiously.

  2. Baldrick says:

Relax guys … you’re getting all worked up over nothing. Sun spots and solar radiation won’t matter any more because soon we’ll be sending our hard earned dollars to Greg in Canberra. He can then use that money to protect us from any nasty weather events caused either by our own planet or even solar radiation. These guys are so good, they can control the Earths climate and I’m sure solar radiation wouldn’t be too far behind that.
You guys should be thankful that Greg, Julia, Wayne, Bob, Tim, Ross and the rest of the guys sitting in our parliament house in Canberra will use our money to make sure we can sleep safe at night cause they can control our Planet or even the Universe for that matter.

  3. How much cooling will it take before the alarmists admit that they were wrong? It’s been ten years already. Perhaps only an ice age will satisfy them.

    • The powers that be know that once trading schemes are in place they are very difficult to reverse. Thats why we need to get this tax thrown out a.s.a.p. to stop this farce being forced upon us. Thats the issue that the warmists dont get, they in effect will be assisting big money managers & corporations in ripping more money out of economies (see: taxpayers) by implementing an ETS that will have its own “market” to buy & sell carbon credits.
The actual cooling of the planet doesnt bother them as they have all decided that the “science is settled”.

  4. Warwick says:

Seems to me that as Global Temps have cooled slightly in last decade and sea level rise have slowed, we have already achieived more than is hoped for by the introduction of a Carbon Tax by doing nothing, so maybe we should just continue to do nothing

  5. Mervyn Sullivan says:

If solar activity diminishes, as is being predicted, then for a couple of decades or more there will be increased levels of cosmic rays hitting the upper atmosphere, greater cloud cover formation, cooler temperatures and greater precipitation and snow cover.

In the mid-1600s sunspot activity also went quiet… similar to now. And within three or four years later, the Little Ice Age commenced. In 2008, NASA warned that sunspot activity was at its lowest.

Amazingly, over the next 20 years, the level of Co2 in the atmosphere is expected to continue rising. So, with Co2 levels rising, and a conspicuous absence of global warming, let alone catastrophic man-made global warming, the IPCC and its believers will inevitably find themselves exposed, scorned and demonized, with too many careers and reputations being cast into the ‘shadow of death’ as their man-made global warming fraud gets buried under an overwhelming weight of empirical evidence proving they were all completely wrong!

That is when the media will then blame the politicians… the politicians will blame the economists… the economists will blame the scientists and academia… they in turn will blame the computer modelers… the computer modelers will blame the IPCC… the IPCC will blame the science academies… science academies will blame Maggie Thatcher… Maggie will blaming the British coal miners… and the coal miners will blame it all on the media!

  6. Sundance says:

I wonder if the 97% consensus of climate scientists who have staked their reputations on non-stop warming will label the quiet Sun a “denier”?

  7. Please, dear rational readers (and marnit!), treat yourselves to a read of James Delingpoles’

10 reasons to be cheerful about the coming new Ice Age

Sure, it embodies the odd, thinly veiled, call for the grizzly termination of prominent alarmist economy wreckers. Forgiveable journalistic license, though. I’m sure Richard Glover – to pick just one – would understand that!
