2014: Hottest year EVAH! No, it isn’t.

Satellites don't lie, unlike the UN and WMO

Satellites don’t lie, unlike the UN and WMO

The World Meteorological Organisation, an arm of the UN, is working itself up into a climate-gasm at the possibility of 2014 being the Hottest Year Evah™.

Strangely enough, this is at precisely the same time that climate talks in Lima, organised by, er, the UN, are trying to encourage the world to take urgent action on climate change. Coincidence? You be the judge.

Here’s the statement. Bullshit meter maxes out in red, and the only sentence that is actually close to the truth is in blue:

The year 2014 is on track to be one of the hottest, if not the hottest, on record, according to preliminary estimates by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

This is largely due to record high global sea surface temperatures, which will very likely remain above normal until the end of the year. High sea temperatures, together with other factors, contributed to exceptionally heavy rainfall and floods in many countries and extreme drought in others.

WMO’s provisional statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 2014 indicated that the global average air temperature over land and sea surface for January to October was about 0.57° Centigrade (1.03 Fahrenheit) above the average of 14.00°C (57.2 °F) for the 1961-1990 reference period, and 0.09°C (0.16 °F) above the average for the past ten years (2004-2013).

If November and December maintain the same tendency, then 2014 will likely be the hottest on record, ahead of 2010, 2005 and 1998. This confirms the underlying long-term warming trend. It is important to note that differences in the rankings of the warmest years are a matter of only a few hundredths of a degree, and that different data sets show slightly different rankings.

“The provisional information for 2014 means that fourteen of the fifteen warmest years on record have all occurred in the 21st century,” said WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud. “There is no standstill in global warming,” he said.

“What we saw in 2014 is consistent with what we expect from a changing climate. Record-breaking heat combined with torrential rainfall and floods destroyed livelihoods and ruined lives. What is particularly unusual and alarming this year are the high temperatures of vast areas of the ocean surface, including in the northern hemisphere,” he said. (source)

When is anything ‘not consistent’ with a changing climate, you moron? Anyway, back to the real world, where Roy Spencer cools their ardour with some, er, now what are they called? Erm, oh yeah, facts:

2014 Won’t Be Statistically Different from 2010
For a “record” temperature to be statistically significant, it has to rise above its level of measurement error, of which there are many for thermometers: relating to changes in location, instrumentation, measurement times of day, inadequate coverage of the Earth, etc. Oh…and that pesky urban heat island effect.

A couple hundredths of a degree warmer than a previous year (which 2014 will likely be) should be considered a “tie”, not a record.

Our Best Technology, Satellites, Say 2014 Will Not be the Warmest

Our satellite estimates of global temperature, which have much more complete geographic coverage than thermometers, reveal that 2014 won’t be even close to a record warm year.

In fact, the satellite and thermometer technologies seem to be diverging in what they are telling us in recent years, with the thermometers continuing to warm, and the satellite temperatures essentially flat-lining.

So, why have world governments chosen to rely on surface thermometers, which were never designed for high accuracy, and yet ignore their own high-tech satellite network of calibrated sensors, especially when the satellites also agree with weather balloon data?

I will leave it to the reader to answer that one. (source)

I think Michel Jarraud should go and have a cold shower…

  1. Old Sailor Man says:

Gee, I’d believe an old thermometer located in a busy carpark over a satellite any day.
It gets reeeaallly cold in space.

  2. Gavin is now working hard on GISS adjustments to try to make this press release become a reality.

Look at WoodForTrees and you will see how he is trying to jack up the last few months compared to the satellite data.

  3. If you are going to lie then make it a big one, the bigger the lie is then some persons will believe it< I mean who would say such a thing if it were not true?, say it over and over and be relentless in telling your lie, the more times you say it then you will get some rusted on believers. N

  4. I thought that the WMO defined ‘climate’ as weather patterns over a 30 year period. Here they are comparing climates on a year-on-year basis. I heard some guy from the BoM give a 30 minute talk at ANU some months back and he not once mentioned the word ‘weather’ — not once. Everything was ‘climate’ even year-on-year comparisons. Have they forgotten their own definition or am I missing something?

    • I think that many organisation have a problem in defining climate and in understanding how climate works. I recently discovered a site which offered me interesting information and analysis about climate, which are very useful in the process of understanding the present patterns. If you’re interested, you can take a look here: http://www.whatisclimate.com/

  5. Graham Richards says:

Just follow the money……………the rewards for pulling off this, the biggest lie for last 100,000 years, are so enormous and the UN / World Government will be able to wield total control over every country in the world.

It has nothing to do with Co2. Stop arguing with them over this point. They are keeping you from asking the really important questions by using the Co2 to divert your attention!! Ask them what their real agenda is all about. Have you noticed that it is all the SOCIALIST { including our Labor / Greens coalition} organisations that are pushing the Co2 barrow. Surely that explains it all!!!!!

    • We know, Graham, that is what is so depressing…and why the big hoopla over cutting funding to the ABC.

The Socialist agenda can’t be driven without complicity from the ABC and SBS to drive the other ignoramuses that make up all media.

The UN is about total control and world domination and the beginnings are the European Union. Now that individual countries in Europe don’t count, it will be easier for the UN to progress its socialist ideologies, with nary a whisper of dissent.

  6. The WMO is part of the UN apparatus, although they claim to be independent. To see the extent of the impact of Socialist International in the climate scam, check out

  7. Hottest year ever? Sheer propaganda!
