Attenborough: "irrelevant" whether climate change is man-made

Sold out

UPDATE: Attenborough is bankrolled by the BBC, so it’s hardly surprising that he toes the alarmist line. As a commenter pointed out, look what happened to David Bellamy when he dared speak his mind.

We still have to do something about it, apparently. Another icon of my youth, David Attenborough, sells out to the Dark Side and reveals himself as a climate alarmist. Like the Natural History Museum and the BBC, these institutions have sullied their reputations by abandoning impartiality and embracing alarmist hysteria.

Attenborough’s latest pronouncements on the climate make interesting reading, because he seems to suggest that we should take action on climate change irrespective of whether, or to what extent, it is caused by man. I actually heard this in the wee small hours on ABC News Radio and thought I was having a bad dream:

“I don’t think anyone can seriously deny it is happening,” he said. “What the controversy is about is whether mankind has been a factor in that. I personally think we have and it would be surprising if we hadn’t given what we have been doing for the last 125 years.”

We’re all with you so far. Man has had some effect on the climate. Continue.

“But in the way it is irrelevant given temperatures are increasing and we know that is potentially doing a lot of damage and if we can we should try and stop that happening. Whether it is caused by us or not, we can bring down carbon emissions and that could stop temperatures rising.” (source)

Just run that past me again… “whether it is caused by us or not, we can bring down carbon emissions and that could stop temperatures rising.” Right, so you’re not sure whether man-made carbon emissions have caused the recent warming, but cutting those emissions will stop it somehow? Sorry, not following that logic at all, I’m afraid. In fact, it’s complete and utter nonsense.

Not surprising, because this isn’t an argument based on logic, it’s an argument based on an environmental ideology. Thankfully we have Nigel Lawson to put the more rational perspective:

Sir David Attenborough is one of this country’s finest journalists, and a great expert on animal life. Unfortunately, however, when it comes to global warming he seems to prefer sensation to objectivity.

Had he wished to be objective, he would have pointed out that, while satellite observations do indeed confirm that the extent of arctic sea ice has been declining over the past 30 years, the same satellite observations show that, overall, Antarctic sea ice has been expanding over the same period.

Had he wished to be objective, he would have pointed out that the polar bear population has not been falling, but rising.

Had he wished to be objective, he would have mentioned that recent research findings show that the increased evaporation from the Arctic ocean, as a result of warming, will cause there to be more cloud cover, thus counteracting the adverse effect he is so concerned about.

Had he wished to be objective, he would have noted that, while there was indeed a modest increase in mean global temperature (of about half a degree Centigrade) during the last quarter of the 20th century, so far this century both the UK Met Office and the World Meteorological Office confirm that there has been no further global warming at all.

What will happen in the future is inevitably unclear. But two things are clear. First, that Sir David’s alarmism is sheer speculation. Second, that if there is a resumption of warming, the only rational course is to adapt to it, rather than to try (happily a lost cause) to persuade the world to impoverish itself by moving from relatively cheap carbon-based energy to much more expensive non-carbon energy. 1. I used to have a lot of respect for Sir David. With any luck, he’ll live long enough to see how wrong he is.

so if it’s a naturally occuring phenomina how are humans supposed to change it ? Play god ??? bloody alarmist wankers !

  4. Kev Metcalfe via Facebook says:

Well we did such a great job dealing with cane beetles when we introduced cane toads in 1935 and Rabbits turned out exactly as Mr Austin, who released them here, expected “The introduction of a few rabbits could do little harm and might provide a touch of home, in addition to a spot of hunting.” So I can see no reason why interfering with a process that is as perfectly understood as our climate shouldn’t turn out to be just as successful, but perhaps on a larger scale…

  5. Luke Holman via Facebook says:

Whether these people truly believe it or not. To present yourself publicly as anything but a pro-warmist is career suicide. However I wish they would just keep their mouths closed rather than spout illogical rubbish.

  6. Kimberly King Evans via Facebook says:

  7. …this is the same attenborough who was in support of the coming ice age back in the 70’s huh? he was once well respected bbc REPORTER…now hes just the bbc environment spin doctor…should have gone in to acting like your brother dicky…

  8. Sean Reynolds via Facebook says:

Man made climate change? You have to have a lot of brainpower to believe something that stupid, with all the cognitive dissonance required to deny reality.

  9. Bill Misselbrook via Facebook says:

who gets to decide what the correct climate is anyway?

  10. well what we have to do is live with it!

  11. Anita Bugges via Facebook says:

Quite frankly I could do with some bloody global warming right now – am wearing a winter cardi in summer. Oh well, at least it’s not snowing like last December;-) Stopped watching Attenborough years ago, always did prefer Bellamy.

  12. Vermin Ratt via Facebook says:

they use people like attenbourough because he has been on our tv in our living rooms for 60 years, he a perceived to be a trusted public figure. but he is ‘boys club’ stock, nothing but lying scum, the sooner these long term ‘trusted’ people peg it the better. another example is a bbc show called country file, they use a guy who was a kids tv news anouncer to talk about climate change, gm food and wind turdbines,, its the same technique. i’m jsut glad that the majority isnt buying their bullshit

  13. Lew Skannen says:

As a naturalist I wish he would do an episode on all the birds and bats killed by wind farms.

  14. Cloud-seeding will save us all. Don’t worry, silver iodide is harmless. So, too, is aluminium, barium and strontium salts, apparently (even though I could taste chemicals on my lips after being outside taking pictures during such an event). And fook knows what they’ve been loading clouds over the south coast of NSW with, but the last rain deluge left my canvas gazebo top spattered with purple streaks. All for our good, no doubt.

    Or search ‘cloud-seeeding QLD’

[REPLY: Please stay on topic, thanks – Ed]

  15. Next this idiot will be wanting to “do something” about the tide going in and out.

  16. Mervyn Sullivan says:

I heard David Attenborough talking about this.

He would have gained my respect had he simply quoted one peer reviewed study that supports the supposition that Co2 emissions from human activity (but strangely enough not the remaining 97% annual Co2 emissions from natural sources) is causing catastrophic global warming and driving climate change.

He would have gained my respect had he also mentioned that the Arctic has been through this cycle in the past and that there is actually nothing unprecedented about today’s climate.

I guess old age, and working for the biased BBC has finally got to him!

  17. r.m.barclay says:

How long is it going to take before people realise that oceanic surface tension is the major player in this game and agw is a scientific nonsense. Surface tension means that the ocean only accepts the suns rays NOT physical heat. Get your head round that and everything falls into place,Trenberth’s missing heat, the argo buoys underreading, and the falling sea levels. simples.

  18. Bored of idiots says:

Let’s turn a blind eye to the whole thing: pollute, burn fossil fuels and call Attenborough an idiot… What does he know … I’m sure we’re cleverer and have the facts to back it up … right? …

    • Sceptickle says:

Obviously you’re using one of those bamboo Eco puters with the new Hypocrite processor to post this, right?

      • I think, Sceptickle, the idiot’s board wasn’t wurkin’ write when the eco-puters were bamboozlin’ the bored idiot’s hypothalamus.

  19. attenborough is a proponent of reducing the population, believes there are too many of us on the planet and thinks its a good idea to limit the amount of kids people have, which is nice of him considering this old fart has lived his life and already had as many kids as he deemed fit…..i did let him know how i felt through email.

  20. Paul in Sweden says:

“Like the Natural History Museum and the BBC, these institutions have sullied their reputations by abandoning impartiality and embracing alarmist hysteria.”

In the past I gladly paid for excessive family plans for museums and zoos. Today, I will not even pay their suggested donation amounts for admission as I feel this is just money for the militant left to burn.

  21. Attenborough like Noam Chomsky and all those other well paid ‘narrators’ who claim to ‘know the science of AGW’ still follow Al Gore’s ridiculous hockey stick chart by Michael Mann, that has been denounced and rebuked by thousands of scientists as consensus speculation – even the IPCC’s own recent peered paper says it is an exaggeration of Temperatures. These guys just tow the line as they are apart of the whole Media corporate analysis thinktank and really don’t have an opinion, and offer NO solutions to Pollution – which is what we should be discussing – not Tax.

  22. The polar bears are actually increasing in number. Same as crocodiles in Australia; the protected crop are breeding and doubled in numbers now.

Reason they constantly use the polar bears is: they want you to read between the lines, which states: if it becomes too hot on the polar caps… what are we going to do on much warmer latitudes?… panic – BOO!!!
