James Delingpole on the CRU Files

Climate sense

Climate sense

James Delingpole, voice of sanity at the ever more moonbattish UK Telegraph, has an excellent summary of where we stand:

Manipulation of evidence:

“I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.”

Private doubts about whether the world really is heating up:

“The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t. The CERES data published in the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is inadequate.”

Suppression of evidence:

“Can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith re AR4? Keith will do likewise. He’s not in at the moment – minor family crisis. Can you also email Gene and get him to do the same? I don’t have his new email address. We will be getting Caspar to do likewise.”

Fantasies of violence against prominent Climate Sceptic scientists:

“Next time I see Pat Michaels at a scientific meeting, I’ll be tempted to beat the crap out of him. Very tempted.”

Attempts to disguise the inconvenient truth of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP):

“…Phil and I have recently submitted a paper using about a dozen NH records that fit this category, and many of which are available nearly 2K back–I think that trying to adopt a timeframe of 2K, rather than the usual 1K, addresses a good earlier point that Peck made w/ regard to the memo, that it would be nice to try to “contain” the putative “MWP”, even if we don’t yet have a hemispheric mean reconstruction available that far back…”

Turnbull "confident of ETS deal"

Too green for me

Too green for me

It seems a bit mundane to be discussing our local politics after the excitement of the last 24 hours, but I guess we must. Malcolm Turnbull is still pressing ahead with trying to negotiate the ETS through parliament:

ANTI-EMISSIONS trading scheme forces within the Coalition are ramping up their demands in a bid to make it impossible for the Liberal Party to back a climate change deal with the government, as the issue reignites speculation over the leadership of Malcolm Turnbull.

But the Liberal leader believes that he can win party support for an emissions trading deal if the Rudd government makes enough concessions for him to be able to recommend it.

“I am confident that if I recommend a deal, it will win the support of the shadow cabinet and the partyroom,” he told The Weekend Australian.

But that will depend on whether the government is prepared to give sufficient ground on the opposition’s amendments in the negotiations that will continue this weekend.

“My view is that we should responsibly and constructively seek to amend the government’s proposal,” Mr Turnbull said.

“If we cannot achieve amendments to our satisfaction then of course we’ll vote it down. If we can achieve amendments that satisfy our concerns then we should support it.”

Save us from this climate madness.

Moonbat media plays down CRU leak

Moonbat media

Moonbat media

Of course we could rely on the lefty media, in thrall to the global warming bandwagon, to trivialise the significance of the leaked emails and documents.

The Guardian (UK) huffs and puffs and wheels out the “poor ikkle alarmists” routine:

Over the past five years, Mann and Jones in particular have been subjected not only to legitimate scrutiny by other researchers, but also to a co-ordinated campaign of personal attacks on their reputation by ‘sceptics’. If the hacked e-mails are genuine, they only show that climate researchers are human, and that they speak badly in private about ‘sceptics’ who accuse them of fraud.

It is inevitable as we approach the crucial meeting in conference in Copenhagen in December that the sceptics would try some stunt to try to undermine a global agreement on climate change. There is no smoking gun, but just a lot of smoke without fire. (source)

CRU emails/data are real

Phil Jones, Director CRU

Phil Jones, Director CRU

Update on this story. Phil Jones of CRU has confirmed that the material is genuine:

The director of Britain’s leading Climate Research Unit, Phil Jones, has told Investigate magazine’s TGIF Edition tonight that his organization has been hacked, and the data flying all over the internet appears to be genuine.

In an exclusive interview, Jones told TGIF, “It was a hacker. We were aware of this about three or four days ago that someone had hacked into our system and taken and copied loads of data files and emails.”

“Have you alerted police”

Not yet. We were not aware of what had been taken.”

Jones says he was first tipped off to the security breach by colleagues at the website RealClimate.

“Real Climate were given information, but took it down off their site and told me they would send it across to me. They didn’t do that. I only found out it had been released five minutes ago.”

TGIF asked Jones about the controversial email discussing “hiding the decline”, and Jones explained what he was trying to say….

Marooned!

This is what that $50 billion of global warming research funding is spent on – photoshopping spoof images of climate sceptics (from the Hadley Files). Entitled “Marooned”:

Done on the Met Office supercomputer, I guess?

Done on the Met Office supercomputer, I guess? No wonder the projections are such crap…

Turnbull loses key ETS ally

Tony Abbott

Tony Abbott

Another major figure in the Liberal party has hardened his position on the ETS, making it even more difficult for Malcolm Turnbull to claim that the party backs his views on climate change:

MALCOLM Turnbull is facing growing shadow cabinet pressure to vote down the government’s emissions trading bills, with former minister Tony Abbott abandoning his earlier support for the Opposition Leader’s strategy to try to amend and pass the scheme.

Mr Abbott’s shift, and Liberal Senate leader Nick Minchin’s strong advocacy of the “vote no” view within the Coalition, will make it harder for Mr Turnbull to persuade his shadow cabinet to support the deal expected to be finalised between the government and the opposition by early next week.

In July, Mr Abbott was staunchly behind Mr Turnbull’s strategy, urging Liberal MPs to allow the Opposition Leader to exercise his assessment on emissions trading and to save the Coalition from a double dissolution fight “it can’t win”.

Now he is arguing internally that the “politics have changed”, that the Coalition is now in a “pre-election phase” where it is wise to differentiate itself from the government and that the vehemence of the Coalition climate sceptics means a “no” vote is the only way to avoid a wide and damaging split in the Liberal Party.

Publicly, Mr Abbott has been warning there will be a very high price for Coalition support, saying the government would need to accept all of the Coalition’s proposed amendments before the Coalition would vote for the scheme.

UPDATED: CRU emails disclosed

Hadley Centre - what's been going on here?

Hadley Centre - what's been going on here?

Apparently a huge quantity of highly sensitive emails and data have been “hacked” from the Hadley Climate Research Unit (CRU) in the UK. I haven’t yet had a chance to consider any of them in detail. I am not publishing anything until we know more clearly what their precise legal status is.

However, I have read some of them and if they are real and not fake, this is absolute dynamite, and will destroy the credibility of the alarmist cause.

Another day, another hysterical prediction

Unbelievable hype

Unbelievable hype

As we always knew, the stories are getting even more hysterical as we get closer to Copenhagen, and this is no exception, where the journalists clearly get a kick out of writing this sort of stuff, even producing a scary graphic (see right) :

THE world is spinning toward a catastrophic climate change scenario with temperatures now far more likely to rise by 6C by the end of the century, a leading international team of scientists warned.

An increase of 6C would have irreversible consequences, rendering large parts of the globe uninhabitable and destroying much of life on Earth.

The study by Professor Corinne Le Quere of the British Antarctic Survey and East Anglia University is the most comprehensive so far of how economic changes and shifts in the way people have used land over the past 50 years have affected CO2 concentration in the atmosphere.

It also claims the Earth’s natural ability to absorb CO2 into soil, forests and oceans is declining.

The nightmarish possibility of a 6C temperature rise was made public by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007, when it was then only a worst-case scenario.

And then the inevitable:

Professor Le Quere said next month’s UN climate conference in Copenhagen had to come out with a clear and decisive global policy.

If the agreement is weak or the commitments not respected, it is not 2.5C or 3C we will get, it’s 5C or 6C, that is the path we’re on,” she said.

If scientists really believe that publishing such alarmism will make people believe what they are saying, they are sorely mistaken. It’s far more likely to do the opposite.

Hilarious: Rudd enlists Galileo's help

I know ten facts about climate change now, and they're still all wrong.

I know ten facts about climate change now, and they're still all wrong.

Except he gets it completely back to front! Kevin Rudd is, you know, quite frankly, stunned at the response of the Opposition to his wondrous ETS and just can’t believe that anyone could possibly have a bad word to say for it:

“I’m constantly stunned. It’s as if we’re back into the trial of Galileo or something and they’re simply arguing somehow that the science is fiction and that they alone in their own prejudiced universe occupy fact.

“I mean, we are back almost in a medieval court.”

What a classic own goal! If Rudd had any idea of the history of science (or in fact about anything at all), he would have realised that it was Galileo who was in the position of today’s climate sceptics, bravely proposing a scandalous sun-centred model of the solar system in the face of the religious dogma of the Catholic church (or in the present analogy, the High Church of Global Warming), which stood firmly by the biblical, faith-based, earth-centred model. And for this (ultimately correct) interpretation of the workings of the solar system, Galileo was sentenced by the Pope to house arrest for the remainder of his life. The Catholic church took until 1992, three hundred and fifty years after his death, to admit it was wrong, and a statue of him now stands in the Vatican. How’s that for rehabilitation?

So in order to attack the climate sceptics in the Opposition, Kevin Rudd enlists the help of probably the most famous scientific sceptic in history, who was eventually shown to have been right all along. I always knew our PM was no brain surgeon, but honestly…
