Oscars: Leo gives the speech from two decades ago

Lecturing the little people

Lecturing the little people

It’s taken so long for Leo to win an Oscar, he turned up with a speech about climate change that was twenty years out of date.

When he finally got the nod from the Academy, he trotted out the predictably tedious climate alarmism that might have been stirring or relevant a decade or so ago, but which is almost quaint by today’s standards, when even Michael Mann’s flaccid stick acknowledges the existence of The Pause.

‘Making The Revenant was about man’s relationship to the natural world…climate change is real,’ said DiCaprio. ‘It is happening right now.

It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.’

‘Let us not take our planet for granted,’ he concluded. ‘I do not take tonight for granted.’ (source)

Yawn. The irony is that for almost all the period he has been twiddling his thumbs waiting for his little statuette, there has been essentially no global warming.

Leo then went off in his petrol-fuelled motorcade to fly home in his kerosine-powered private jet.

Shock! Mann’s stick droops…

Alarmists' droop?

Alarmists’ droop?

Mann’s membrum virile is a little more flaccid than it was a decade ago – well, it happens to the best of us.

This detumescence has occurred following the publication of a paper which acknowledges the existence of ‘The Pause’ and essentially confirms what the realists have been saying for some time:

It has been claimed that the early-2000s global warming slowdown or hiatus, characterized by a reduced rate of global surface warming, has been overstated, lacks sound scientific basis, or is unsupported by observations. The evidence presented here contradicts these claims.

No doubt the paper will go on to say that the sneaky old heat is hiding in the deep oceans where nobody can find it, and that when it decides it has had enough and breaks cover, it will be Far Worse Than We Thought™.

In the mean time, the stick is looking decidedly limp.

The list of authors reads like a litany of alarmism: Matthew England, Ben Santer, Michael E Mann…

I don’t for a moment believe that this is any genuine change of position – probably just setting us all up for the final coup de grace where, as a dramatic last exhortation to save the planet, Mann self-conflagrates himself whilst standing on an iceberg, and slowly melts himself into a hole.

CSIRO boss issues apology for ‘religion’ jibe

Forced to apologise…

Forced to apologise…

The Climate Inquisitors got their way and forced an apology – an update on this story from yesterday.

But it is a pyrrhic victory, since it is the zealotry that infects the alarmist cause. [Read more…]

CSIRO boss: warming alarmism ‘more like religion than science’

Even the CSIRO boss is a 'denier' to the zealots…

Even the CSIRO boss is a ‘denier’ to the zealots…

Finally worked it out, then, have we?

Here are some ACM articles from years past on the subject:

Forget chickens, now it’s ‘bored dogs’

Yawn, another ridiculous global warming story.

Yawn, another ridiculous global warming story.

Add it to the list. No really. I checked the date. It isn’t April 1st.

The effect of climate change on chickens is just so… yesterday.

You have to ask the question: if these scientists were actually trying to damage the global warming cause, would they be doing anything different?

Probably not much… it’s beyond parody. [Read more…]

Chickens threatened by climate change

What climate change does to chickens…

What climate change does to chickens…

Not quite as cute or endearing as koalas or polar bears, but still. Needs must when the going gets tough…

Climate change is now affecting chickens. Researchers at Macquarie University have found that higher temperatures could be dangerous for hens.

Parent birds normally lay only one egg a day and control incubation by modifying the temperature that triggers embryo development to produce a clutch of around five chicks that all hatch at the same time.

But according to researchers at the Royal Society of Open Science at Macquarie University, climate change is taking hens control away and causing eggs to hatch earlier.

“If global temperatures were to increase it could play havoc with the family dynamic of these birds, creating situations where a single nest contains chicks from different ages, even causing some embryos to die,” said Professor Simon Griffith.

If one egg hatches before the rest, the first chick will have a monopoly on food. And if temperatures rise above 40.5C researchers say it could be “lethal” for chicks. (source)

I thought it would be a good thing – the eggs would arrive ready-boiled…

CSIRO climate jobs to go – heads explode all round…

Models can't predict this…

Models can’t predict this…

The national science agency, CSIRO, has announced it will restructure its climate change teams to concentrate on dealing with it rather than trying to understand it.

The national science agency has been accused of walking away from climate science after it announced it would refocus from trying to understand it to practical measures to deal with it.

CSIRO chief executive Larry Marshall said yesterday climate change had been well modelled and it was time to start doing something about it.

Dr Marshall, a Sydney-born physicist and Silicon Valley entrepreneur, has ordered a restructure that will put 350 jobs at risk, particularly in environmental research, as the agency pursues “moonshots” capable of delivering practical solutions.

Climate sense

Professor Bob Carter, one of the first scientists to inspire me to research climate alarmism, has died aged 74.

From Heartland:

Dr. Carter was a palaeontologist, stratigrapher, marine geologist and environmental scientist with more than 30 years professional experience. He earned degrees from the University of Otago (New Zealand) and the University of Cambridge (England). He held tenured academic staff positions at the University of Otago (Dunedin) and James Cook University (Townsville), where he was Professor and Head of School of Earth Sciences between 1981 and 1999.

Dr. Carter served as Chair of the Earth Sciences Discipline Panel of the Australian Research Council, Chair of the national Marine Science and Technologies Committee, Director of the Australian Office of the Ocean Drilling Program, and Co-Chief Scientist on ODP Leg 181(Southwest Pacific Gateways).

Dr. Carter was one of the world’s leading authorities on the science of climate change. He was the author of two books on the subject, Climate: The Counter Consensus (2010) and Taxing Air: Facts and Fallacies about Climate Change (2013) and coauthor of several more, including three volumes in the Climate Change Reconsidered series produced by the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) and published by The Heartland Institute. Shortly before his death he coauthored Why Scientists Disagree About Global Warming (2015).

You can read some of ACM’s posts on Bob going back to 2009 here.

Condolences to his wife, family and friends.

Climate Council: junk science leads to record levels of alarmism

Only the ABC cares about Flannery any more...

Only the ABC cares about Flannery any more…

The Climate Council is nothing more than an alarmism generating machine. Every year the level of hysteria increases faster than global temperatures, and breaks records with monotonous regularity.

With Tim Flannery and Will Steffen slowly stewing in their own warmist juices, there is no moderating element to reign in the madness, which gets more and more extreme every year.

And, despite being a privately funded organisation, the Climate Council has the ABC as its uncritical media department, providing – for free – all the publicity that it needs. And when I say ‘for free’, I mean paid for by our taxes. [Read more…]

Coalition infighting will see return to bad old days of Labor – including a carbon price

Do we really want this guy as PM? Really??!!

Do we really want this guy as PM? I mean, really?

The Coalition seems to have a healthy self-destruct instinct which it must have inherited from the shambolic disaster that was Rudd-Gillard-Rudd.

But let’s look at the achievements of the Coalition government so far: it has removed the pointless and futile carbon tax, removed the mining tax (which raised no revenue) and has effectively stopped the thousands of illegal immigrants arriving by boat, many of whom were dying needlessly at sea thanks to Labor’s politically-correct multiculti-gone-mad open borders policy.

Tony Abbott and the government should be emphasising the dire state of our debt position, which is costing the economy billions in interest alone each year, and pointing out every single day that it is Labor, the authors of the mess, that are preventing the action necessary to start clearing it up.

But despite the worst Labor government in living memory, a Galaxy poll at the end of January showed 44% thought Bill Shorten would make the better prime minister, compared to 29% for Abbott, and the Coalition trailing Labor 43-57 on a two-party preferred basis.

Can Australian memories be that bad? Are we all suffering from mass dementia? How can people be seriously considering re-electing Labor barely 18 months after turfing them out at the federal election?

How can Coalition backbenchers seriously consider dumping the sitting prime minister, when during Labor’s administration they criticised Labor for the chaos and lack of stability caused by dumping Rudd?

Yes, Abbott has an image and communication problem, and seems incapable of sticking the knife into Labor about the damage it is wreaking on our economy. Yes, there is clearly a governance issue in the PM’s office, and the Chief of Staff is becoming the story, which is never a good look.

Yes, polls are looking bad right now, but that is partly due to the fact that people have become too comfortable with a culture of government hand-outs and benefits. Australia lived beyond its means for the six years of Labor incompetence, and naturally it is difficult when belts have to be tightened. But governments should not chase populism, they should put the interests of the country’s future first, even if that is initially unpopular with the electorate.

Otherwise, in late 2016, we will be plunged back into the nightmare of a Labor government, with hundreds of boats arriving every month, government spending and taxes going through the roof, borrowing escalating, and, most crucially from this blog’s point of view, the return of a pointless, ineffective tax on carbon dioxide, which as we all know, will cause huge damage to our economy, and make no difference whatsoever to the climate.
